Construction of the Metropolitan and District Railway

Photograph
1866-67

Gloucester Road Station under construction, looking towards South Kensington. The high arched roof was constructed using timber scaffolding, with the metal arched ribs assembled in sections and built up to the timber. Four workmen are just visible on the roof, no doubt without the aid of safety equipment!
